Certificate of Advanced Studies in Motivational Interviewing

The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Motivational Interviewing is run under the auspices of the Faculty of Psychology, University of Basel, and teaches solution-oriented and practice-proven behaviors and skills that enable and actively drive change processes. Communication strategies are used that specifically promote motivation and actively use the resistance of complex-motivated people to change their behavior.

The aim of the one-year Certificate of Advanced Studies in Motivational Interviewing is to develop and consolidate professional and personal skills for the sustainable initiation, promotion and implementation of behavioral change in various clinical settings. The focus is on the professional participating in the course and their professional and personal development process. They experience the therapeutic effect on themselves and thus learn to understand the theory from their own experience and apply it in their clinical work. The combination of theory teaching, practical exercises, self-awareness and supervision supports a practical and sustainable learning process.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivation is a key factor in changing problem behavior. Motivational interviewing(MI) is probably the most effective and efficient method for promoting motivation for change and sustainable behavioral change. The concept, developed by the two psychologists William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, was developed for counseling people with substance disorders and is now used successfully for various problem behaviors as well as in the treatment of mental disorders and somatic illnesses.
